Drawing Final Exam
Required:
Look at that View was challenging but successful. When brainstorming I came up with so many ideas that could have come out well so it was difficult to pick just one to actually do. I finally decided to draw a chicken. Once I figured out my subject matter I had to figure out my composition. Getting reference photos was difficult. I don't have any spare chickens just pecking around, and even if I did, the process of photographing one from the angle that I wanted would be an interesting experience. By combing through the internet I was able to create a collection of chickens, however creating a good composition without an exact reference photo was a challenge. I finally created a decent looking composition and began my final sketch. This was when I had to figure out what colors I was going to use, how I was going to create depth, and what I was going to do with the background. Because my sketch was on white paper and my final was on tan paper the colors differed so I had to adjust from what I originally planned. When actually creating my final, I spent a lot of time doing the details on and layering up the face of my chicken. This caused me to run short on time (which happened a lot this semester) and rush a bit towards the end. The overall piece still came out nice and I can still add more layers in the future if I want. Overall I found it to be successful, as I chose a creative subject matter and it's relatively well executed. |
Question 4: The facial features placement lesson and practice drawings were very beneficial to the self portrait drawing. Although I drew my face in pieces in the final project, the placement lesson was still helpful. I used the rules I learned from the lesson to outline where my features would be in proportion to each other before adjusting them to my face. The practice facial feature drawings were extremely helpful. Following along to the videos helped me learn techniques and things to look out for when drawing eyes, noses, lips, and ears. Drawing my own facial features was difficult and kind of awkward, however it was good to get used to that prior to drawing a full portrait. I was also able to see how easy it is for them to look off and note what I could improve.
Question 5: I think that everything Alli did this semester looked amazing and more than exemplified what the project was about (sitting next to her meant that I was able to see all of the amazing things that she created) but her Look at That View project really stood out. It took Alli a while to make, but it was worth it. Her subject matter of a volcano was really creative and unique. She gave a lot of attention to the details. The colors are amazing. They're all very vibrant and the use of purple throughout worked well, tying everything together. There's also a nice level of contrast. Overall this piece is stunning.

Question 6: My favorite medium to work with was colored pencil. Color pencil has a nice balance of color, vibrancy, blending, and precision. Through layering I was able to create nice colors in my pieces. I do wish that I had achieved a higher level of burnish in some of them, however. Even though they blended nicely, color pencils were still useful to create the precision necessary for detailed pieces, like the seeds in my strawberry drawing. Prismacolor also produce vibrant colors and I like the appearance of vibrant colors. Throughout my art classes I've taken in high school Prismacolor colored pencil has continuously been one of my favorite mediums.

Question 7: I feel that my still life was my least successful piece this semester. When I first created it I thought it looked pretty good, however looking back it could have a lot of improvements. It needs more medium range values, as there is currently a stark contrast between light and dark values. Some of the objects in the still life are kind of awkward looking, like the paint bottle and the pinwheel. I rushed to finish the fabric at the bottom, so it lacks depth and detail. These are are problems that I could go back and somewhat fix in the future if I have the time.
